Instead of backing up to a mapped drive from each computer, it would make more sense to install CrashPlan on the fileserver, and then set each computer to back up to that copy over the network, as a "computer" or "friend" destination. In your description of your situation, it looks like you're trying to back up to your fileserver.
Like the linked workaround, it's not supported. Some users have had success using symlinks, though we've seen instability there as well. I'm fairly certain you've already attempted this, however, as you've tried multiple ideas.
